Practice 1 – Family, Safety, Security

Chakra 1

The first chakra is at the base of your spine.

It holds the energy of  family, safety, and security.

Also, the ability to provide for life’s necessities,

ability to stand up for one’s self,

feeling at home,

social and family law and order,

grounding, earth energy, and the physical body.

Exercise: This will be helpful whether 1 or both of you choose to do this exercise. I’ve found that one person doing the full exercise can spur excellent conversation without both partners doing the whole thing. So choose whatever feels right and accessible to you.

Intro/grounding – Find a comfortable and quiet location to sit where your legs are in contact with the ground. Have a journal near by so you can work on the self reflection questions afterwards.

  • Allow yourself to rock, stretch, roll or move in anyway that helps you relax and connect with your body and the earth
  •  Touch the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth.
  • Gazing up towards your 3rd eye  with your eyes closed, take 3 slow, deep breaths or chant 3 OMs.
  • Imagine energy from the earth coming up through your legs filling the bowl of your pelvis and returning to the center of earth from your tail bone.
  • Staying in tune with this energy, consider the following questions.

Questions for self examination – write in a journal to explore the following questions. You may then choose to share what you’d like with your partner.

  1. What belief patterns did I inherit from my family?
    1. List them.
    2. Then go through and Identify “agreements” or beliefs that you still hold, but that you no longer feel are valid. (Optional: explore, where did they come from?)
    3. Choose new beliefs/agreements to replace the old ones. Be sure to use positive language such as “I choose to believe” instead of “not believing” when you write them out.
  2. List all the blessings you feel came from your family.
  3. List or star the qualities you wish to have in the new family you are creating with your partner.
  4. What traditions would you like to continue/create for your new family?
  5. What characteristics of yourself would you like to strengthen, develop, or grow as you enter this new phase of your life?
